Finally finished!! It was amazing. I did a slow read with Footnotes&Tangents and it was such a satisfying and fulfilling exercise.

Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I totally get the hype and why people call it the greatest novel ever written. But did it have to be so long?

What is there to say about War and Peace that hasn't already been written a thousand times? A story that asks what it means to be human and how that manifests in life; be it through war, relationships, family, etc. I loved it and the dueling philosophies/character arcs of Pierre and Andrey were fascinating. I didn't love the epilogue, especially part 2. Also it must be said, this is one of those books where I think I really did love it, but also wonder if i loved it because I am proud that I finished it.

I understand that the painstaking level of detail is part of the point of this book, but I still felt it could have been at least 300 pages shorter while still properly conveying its theme of predetermination. Other than that I do think the themes were effectively executed in form and content, but some parts were so unbearable to get through (literally every woman’s character arc ending and the pages upon pages of battle strategy) that I had to force myself to forget about sunk cost. Still finished it and found the philosophy interesting so I guess “it had to be so.”

I'm not going to finish this one anytime soon. I'll come back to it someday and try again. I hear that somewhere in the middle you really get caught up in the story, but I just couldn't make it that far. Anna Karenin is one of my favorite books of all time, but I haven't been able to get hooked by this one.
