At the beginning of this story, Bear is grumpy and unkind to Puppy. When Puppy asks his name, Bear replies "it's none of your beeswax, but I'm Bear." The two become friends and have fun all summer then Bear starts school and Puppy doesn't.

Neo chose this book and so we decided to add it to our reading binge. Puppy and Bear met one summer day by a gnarled oak tree. After a little playing, they could not get enough of one another, playing games all day long. When Bear does not appear one day, Puppy gets worried and goes looking, only to find that Bear is in school. Depressed, Puppy goes to hide, but is discovered by Bear in the late afternoon. They share their feelings and make a plan to help one another. Neo liked the illustrations and thought the story was pretty good, though wonders why bears go to school and are awake in the winter.
