Morality v. Loyalty – heavy stuff here.
My dude, Abner, is a mess. He’s a war vet who could have potentially been dishonorably discharged and may also be suffering from some mental illness that manifested before he went off to war. Old Abner is cranky and generally unpleasant – to everyone.
His father spoke for the first time, his voice cold and harsh, level, with-out emphasis: “I aim to. I don’t figure to stay in a country among people who…” he said something unprintable and vile, addressed to no one.
He likes fire. I mean, likes it a lot.
[T]he element of fire spoke to some deep mainspring of his father's being, as the element of steel or of powder spoke to other men, as the one weapon for the preservation of integrity, else breath were not worth the breathing, and hence to be regarded with respect and used with discretion.
Or, you know, to be used when slights both real and imagined are thrown in your direction.
This felt tense up until the very end when little Sarty makes his decision on whether to be moral or be loyal.

Ωραίο διήγημα.Αν και το δείγμα είναι μικρό,η γραφή του Φώκνερ είναι δυνατή και υψηλού επιπέδου.Σίγουρα θα διαβάσω και άλλο έργο του κάποια στιγμή στο μέλλον.

Σε αυτή την ιστορία ενηλικίωσης κεντρική φιγούρα είναι ο Σαρτυ Σνοουπς ο οποίος προσπαθεί με την οικογένεια του να επιβιώσει στον αμερικάνικο Νότο μετά τον εμφύλιο.
Η συμβίωση με τον βίαιο πατέρα του όμως είναι γεμάτη φόβο και συνεχή σύγκρουση με την "αλήθεια και δικαιοσύνη" όπως λέει ο ίδιος μέσα στο κείμενο.
Μέσα από τις σκέψεις του μικρού αγοριού παρακολουθούμε την προσπάθεια του να καταλάβει τον πατέρα του και τα κίνητρα του αλλά μέσα του ξυπνάει η συνειδητοποιηση ότι η σιωπηλή υποταγή στην καταπιεστικη πατρική εξουσία γίνεται όλο και πιο δύσκολη.
Διαβάζοντας το διήγημα κάποιος καταλαβαίνει γιατί αυτές οι λίγες σελίδες είναι τόσο αριστουργηματικες που αξίζουν όχι μόνο μια θέση σε κάποια ανθολογία αλλά μια ξεχωριστή έκδοση. Σαν αυτή.
"Άραγε γιατί κάποιος που όχι μόνο είχε δει με τα μάτια του τη σπατάλη και την αφθονία του πολέμου αλλά είχε και στο δικό του αίμα μια έμφυτη και ακόρεστη τάση να διασπαθιζει οτιδήποτε δεν του ανήκε, γιατί αυτός ο άνθρωπος να μην πυρπολησει ό,τι έβρισκε στο διάβα του;"
