Perfect quick listen for chores. Nothing very interesting, but the length makes it bearable. I laughed afew times as listened and cleaned my house.

Short story.   The prose worked hard to paint evocative, vivid imagery of the story's settings and characters. The pacing is impeccable - tense at times, and definitely grips your attention throughout.   Ending was unexpected.

Oddly Twee

I have to be honest and say that I don't think I'm the intended audience for this story. The writing is decent and the performance is great, but I just didn't care about or connect with any of the characters or the events. It came off as a kind of cishet male fantasy of surviving bumbling through life or escaping a denigrating patriarch. The characters and story seemed kinda cookie cutter and lacking real depth and the ending was far too neatly wrapped up and smug for my kind of short story.

Like I said, clearly this just wasn't my cup of tea, as others seem to really like it.

Oh, and the really weird comment about not being able to catch skinny Kenyans was such an example of old school casual racism that set my teeth on edge.

Not sure how to give this warm little story less of a good rating. Being so short it had to do a lot of work to get you to like some characters, hate others and come out feeling good at the end. It doesn't hurt that Ed Harris voices the story :)

I didn’t feel connected to the characters because the story was so short. Great job by Winslow, not making the plot feel rushed even though it didn’t have many words.
