I first heard about this book from Book of the Month.
"Listen for the Lie" follows Lucy. Many years ago, Lucy was found wandering the streets of her small hometown covered in blood, her best friend Savvy's blood. The town was quick to write her off as a murderer, especially when Lucy could not remember anything. Lucy decided it best to move to L.A. and try to start her life over. Now, in the present, Ben Owens, the host of a wildly successful true crime podcast, has decided to make the case of Lucy and Savvy the subject of his next season. Lucy is forced to return to her hometown and try to finally remember what happened.
This story was absolutely phenomenal. I kept thinking I had it figured out, but then something new would be revealed and I would realize I did not know what was actually happening. The ultimate "reveal" I did not see coming and I was thoroughly pleased with the mystery and the resolution.
Lucy is the ultimate unreliable narrator. She does not remember one of the most important nights of her life, and this has haunted her every day since. She also does not trust herself because there is a voice inside of her head that is telling her to kill, and if that is the case, then maybe she did murder her best friend? Despite being hated by an entire town, Lucy comes across very strong and willing to face the people who have turned their backs on her. I loved her sarcastic humor and approach to dealing with leering eyes when she was home.
Lucy's Grandma was an absolute riot. I loved seeing one person believe whole heartedly in Lucy, and I loved that she went out of her way to try and prove Lucy's innocence, even when Lucy did not believe it herself.
Ben seems like a really great, golden retriever guy. He is smart, talented, and not at all arrogant given the success of his show. I loved watching him and Lucy interact, and I loved how he treated Lucy just like a person. For all he knew, Lucy really did do it, but she does not remember, but he never treated her like a murderer; it was the true embodiment of innocent until proven guilty.
I had such a great time with this mystery, and I highly recommend it!

Didn’t really care for the podcast format or the amnesia (too convenient a plot device). Characters were too superficial. Only one I really liked was the grandmother. Everyone should have a gran like her.

This book was incredibly addicting! I flew through this book within a few days because I was so eager to uncover what truly went down between Savvy and Lucy. I really enjoyed how captivating this story was written and how it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
The plot of this book had me totally hooked from reading the synopsis itself. Then once I actually started reading, I was in it 100% from the very beginning. It only took me reading the first chapter to want to uncover the truth of what happened that fated night between Lucy and her best friend. I found myself intrigued, but also a bit hesitant towards Lucy as our FMC.Amy Tintera does a really good job at portraying her in a manner that truly has the reader question Lucy’s reliability, and even make us believe for a bit that Lucy is not quite right. The reader will begin to question if maybe she is the one that killed Savvy after all, which makes the actual reveal so much more satisfying.
I absolutely LOVED the podcast sections of the book. Podcasts and pretty much any type of other media in books is one of my favorite inclusions ever. You will 100% be seeing that aspect in my own books, heheh. I also listened to the audiobook of this book as I read and they added music before each podcast episode, which was SO fun. I literally told my friend that I am kind of sad that I do not get to hear the music anymore now that I have finished the book, haha. I highly recommend the audiobook for this one as well! The performances and podcast element are so much fun and make it even more addicting. I was unable to both stop listening and stop reading this book.
As far as the big reveal/twist goes, I was able to guess the killer around 74% into the book. However, I am a huge thriller and horror fan so I am pretty good at catching the killer, as I am very familiar with all of the tropes and rules of these genres (shout out to the Scream franchise for this knowledge). With that being said, I do still think the reveal was executed in such a smart manner, and it was timed perfectly with having the flashbacks trickled throughout the main storyline in the book. I did not completely solve the reveal, just mainly who the killer was themselves. I thought it was written and executed wonderfully.
In the end, I really enjoyed this book and had so much fun reading it! I thought it was a super compelling book that kept me engaged, wanting to uncover the truth, and eagerly turning my pages the entire time. I rate this book 4.5/5 stars! 🌟

I heard great things about Listen for the Lie, so I decided to get the audiobook and do exactly what that title commands. I ate it up yesterday.
Five years ago, Lucy was found wandering the streets covered in her best friend Savvy's blood, so naturally, everyone in their small Texas town thinks she's the murderer. Lucy now lives in LA and still struggles to remember the details of that night. Enter Ben Owens, the host of the popular true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie." Unfortunately for Lucy, he's chosen to focus on Savvy's murder for his second season. Lucy is now forced to return to her hometown to help solve her friend's murder.
The chapters are told from Lucy's perspective, plus flashbacks that show who Savvy was. Ben's interviews with the people closest to the women are entertaining. Revelations come to light about some members of their community that made me clutch my pearls.
I enjoyed this funny mystery thriller. I loved Lucy's dry humor and that she doesn't take herself seriously despite being a murder suspect and having to withstand stares from townspeople wherever she goes. I especially loved how the reader is left wondering if Lucy did it or not. She's not a reliable reporter. She doesn't remember the events leading up to her being found a bloody mess.
This great whodunit is narrated by January LaVoy and Will Damron. LaVoy nails Lucy's sarcasm. Lucy's been through a lot, so she's skeptical and also doesn't make the best decisions when it comes to men. LaVoy does a great job conveying this. Another standout character is Lucy's grandmother. She's fiesty and hilarious and actually provides great insight into the role sexism has played in the investigation of the murder. I enjoyed the banter between her and Lucy. Ben makes questionable decisions during the investigation, but Damron does a great job portraying his honesty about the situation. Both voice actors did a phenomenal job with the characters.
I highly recommend listening to this book instead of reading it, if you can.
