Very important and eye opening read for those who don’t know much about the working poor and the welfare system in this country. Hopefully can enlighten some perspectives and inspire more compassion for our neighbors
This is an eye opening look at what it’s like to live in poverty. It shows the day to day struggles, but also the thinking behind those struggles-and that’s where my learning really happened. It shows the cracks in the system that are equally infuriating and absurd. It‘s not perfect, and seemed a bit rushed at the end, but it’s worthwhile, real read and I’m looking forward to see what else Land writes.
3.5 stars, a good memoir and an important look into the cleaning/service/essential worker industry and being a poor single mother.

This reminded me of a modern Nickel and Dimed, except even more impactful because it depicts the author's real life. A deeply personal story about the struggle of one woman to get by and provide for her daughter, as well as a more universal one about the lives of the working poor. Well written and poignant, and the audio was well read by the author as well.

An inside look into the lifestyle of the working poor and how many hurtles we put between them and access to any minimal safety net programs. The system is gamed to prevent them from bettering themselves and to stay in a permanent state of scrambling for crumbs.
