Such beautiful writing, and I found the characters and the world so compelling. This is definitely a slower read and I can understand why someone might not like it, especially if they were not as drawn in by the prose or Effy as I was. She was flawed for sure, but no less compelling because of it. The ending was a little bit lacklustre to me, especially because of all the build up with the Fairy King, but I still very much enjoyed this read.

This was a tougher read for me. I really struggled to get into it which was odd for me because I love this style of fantasy usually. Once I got about halfway through it started picking up for me and I was able to dive a little deeper into the story.

Overall it’s a good story with bits of academia, Fae and mysterious myths sprinkled throughout a story of a woman finding her voice and place in a world bent on keeping her in a box enforced by men of all sorts. I’m going to pick up the second book and look forward to getting to know Effy and Preston more.

I really loved the writing and thinking and the creativity, the characters were really lovable and I just loved the tension between the main characters
