Seth Dickinson

3.99 AVERAGE

You don't pick up a Seth Dickinson book for an easy pleasurable read. You pick it for the mind-fuck and boy, does he deliver. This book takes you through the horror of "first contact" with an unhealthy dose of acid on top. Both the fictional and non-fictional ideas presented here are marvelous. But what I really loved were the fleshed-out characters and how unique they were.

Being an Iranian myself, I was ready for silly mistakes and Hollywoodism, but I guess Seth really did a deep research on the region. All the people from various parts of the world were presented in an authentic way, and that made the story much better.

This is a hard read. But in a fascinating way, you don't want it to ever end.

A brutal stunner of a political sci-fi thriller that doesn’t pull a single punch. This was much darker than I thought it would be, and I’m not certain I was ready for it.
There are times it absolutely rocks, and the climax of the book is practically the entire last third.
It left me breathless and a bit melancholy.

 -evangelion if it wasn't shit
-no book has the right to be 660 pages long.
-the only parts worth reading are the first act, and the segment where they explore the ship
-racial essentialism???
-interesting metafictional concepts about stories and souls
-there is a such thing as TOO much character development
-there is far far too much by far going on in this book: first contact, biohazard/quarantine horror, american imperialism commentary, fate/destiny/free will, star wars space battle, lesbian roommate romcom,

Good book overall, pretty crazy, solid for Seth Dickinson. Deserves a reread or two to fully appreciate everything the author's putting on the table.
