~ 3.5 ⭐ basically anywhere between 3 and 4 stars depending on what im thinking of so we settle.
1. worldbuilding: it's earth within larger alien worlds. 4/5 seth dickinson is always good at worldbuilding however again most of the concern was earth in this book so
2. characters: 4/5 some of them i quite liked some of them got annoying after a bit because no change, the point was no change in them, but like idk im tired of being objective ab everything i stopped caring about several of them because they stopped appealing. like theyre well written everyone has decently compelling backgrounds and motivations and conflicts but i didnt enjoy how some of the muslim characters were written (mightve mentioned this) and i was very confused about stuff another character said which was evidently just . not right LMAOOO
3. plot: 3/5 yeahhhhh uh . one thing was happening but it took ages to occur because so many things felt long winded exaggerations into things that ultimately did not matter very much..? pacing issues imo. description issues muchly. middle of the book feels tedious but the beginning and after about the 50% mark its good !!
4. themes: 3/5 aliens v humanity. space! math. The American Military. So Much Military Force From Everywhere. at some point the concept of nuclear weaponry was lost
5. writing style: 4/5 v good. including all research done for things that feel frankly unneeded notwithstanding im Sorry seth
6. recommend: sure mayb youll have a better time than i did reading through the pop culture refs and also 1 million lines about american military . i think i just hated how american it felt despite ALL of the non american characters and the fact that the protag is supposed to be dealing with a Lot being a kurdish genocide survivor and all. i genuinely do not care ab america man
Very few modern authors are quite as capable as Seth Dickinson at looking the reader directly in the eye while stabbing you in the chest. Though if The Traitor Baru Cormorant is a dagger between the ribs, then Exordia is more like brass knuckles to the solar plexus. Five stars.

I think this worked really well and not just because I'm weak for SF with a lot of military jargon and psychosexual tension. the last third is an endurance haul but it's worth it. (I hope there's never a sequel)

This book took me a long time to finish due to the writing style and jargon. I really wanted to quit many times because of it. I liked the storyline. I was not expecting the ending and I liked the different characters throughout just fine. The plot was the most interesting for me. The book ends with everything feeling unresolved? But there’s no clear indication that there’s going to be a second book.
