9/27/20 Bumping this up to 4.5 stars because I just started book 2 and had such a warm and fuzzy feeling from reading these characters again! I also might reread the first book after reading Onyx, because I bet thing will look different...

OKAY. So I had this review all typed out, but of course, when I submitted it GOODREADS DECIEDED TO GO DOWN. I am not going to try and retype out everything that I was trying to say because I can't even remember everything I said.

I don't five star a lot of books. With that being said:

Read this book.

Fantastic Romantic Paranormal YA Story

This book sucked me in and I couldn't put it down! It's got great mystery and action! It also has swoony sweet romance❤️ Hopefully, it will heat up more in later books

Cheesy, full of sexual tension, sometimes cringe-worthy and... surprisingly enjoyable.

There are several reasons why Obsidian would never work for me. Here are some of them:

* The genre. Some of the worst books I've ever read have been paranormal romance. Ever since then I have not been wanting to pick up something more in the category, because the memory of those terrible books is still lingering.

* The constant comparisons to Twilight. Another book I read and only got halfway through.

* The plot sounded very cliché - girl moves to a new town, meets the hottest boy she has laid her eyes on, but of course he turns out to be a jerk. Yet she's head over heels for him.

But to my surprise, I ended up enjoying this book. Quite a lot, even.

Now on to the problems I had while actually reading the book.
* Daemon nicknaming Katy ''Kitten.'' CRINGE. CRINGE. Also a classic move in the PNR genre.

* Katy was just going on and on about how Daemon is the most physically attractive male she has ever seen, but then reminds herself that she wants to slap him every time he opens his mouth. It got repetitive and annoying.

* One of the reasons why I'm not too fond of PNR is because the books all seem to have a similar structure when it comes to combining the two genres. The first half is filled with romance and the second half (after the love interest has revealed his 'big secret'), tons of information about the supernatural creatures is dumped.

* Daemon has an overwhelming amount of powers. I found myself wondering ''Is there anything he can't do?'' while reading.
And he's really just light. Yeah, the kind that comes out of lamps. Wow.

Now onto what I liked.

To my surprise, I ended up enjoying the first romance filled half a lot (Well, it's more like a lot of sexual tension and sarcastic comments than romance). It was fun and even though I'm still not swooning over the love interest, and the romance isn't my favorite, Daemon and Katy's banter back and forth made me laugh.

But what I really like about Obsidian is that it doesn’t try too hard. It’s not the guy who writes cheesy poems about how your hair smells like, asks for your hand in marriage and is overall clingy.
No. Obsidian is the book that sits on your shelf and says ’’Hey, I’m a predictable, sometimes cheesy yet entertaining paranormal romance book. Nothing perfect or extraordinary, but what the hell. Screw that. You wanna have some fun?’'
And it is. Fun. Maybe there's some hope for paranormal romance.
I sure didn’t think there was when I was first introduced to the genre. *cough, cough* [b:Evermore|3975774|Evermore (The Immortals, #1)|Alyson Noel|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1362336360s/3975774.jpg|4021549] ]*cough, cough*.

I have now changed my attitude and expectations towards the genre. I go into one of these books expecting mindless fun and cheese. And that's why I liked this. It was a good for a paranormal romance.
As a book overall, it's not special.
Obsidian is light and entertaining. There’s not any depth to the story and it’s overall just an enjoyable book. It's addicting, I give it that. Nothing more.

This book reminds me strongly of when I used to read Wattpad stories. The Story is quite cliche and the characters are over exaggerated and most of the scenes play out like a cliche high school movie. There isn't much character growth and depth to the story and to the world and the mystery is dragged out. It definitely gave me Vampire Diaries vibes, so if you like The Vampire Diaries you might like this, though the storyline is not nearly as interesting as the Vampire Diaries. I don't think I enjoyed it as much as most people because I am reading it in between reading Throne of Glass and I couldn't help but compare Kat to Celeana and obviously Kat makes me want to put my head through a wall, she is the epitome cliche of damsel in distress and is absolutely a one-dimension protagonist who has no role but to describe the looks and actions of the hot, rude and mysterious bad boy. Damon is also an epitome cliche. He's unnecessarily rude most of the time and his actions are questionable at best. It's obvious the author tried to go for sarcasm but it was so badly done it made me cringe most of the time. I honestly couldn't get through it. The entire story consists of scenes between Daemon and Kat and the rest is filler scenes describing how the time passed. The dialogue was cringe and everything that came out of Kats's mouth made me roll my eyes. She's the kind of character that made me want to wack her over the head with a bulldozer and tell her to get a life. I made it halfway through the story and literally nothing had happened yet. It's just such a poorly written novel with bland characters, cringe dialogue and no plot.

Another Twilight rip off, although there are some original ideas, too much a rip off to make me care about the story. One star for Demon's hotness and another for the creative use of light vs shadows but that's all the credit I can give the author.
