I am shocked by how much I liked this book, considering how utterly unlikable the protagonist is. It was actually eye-opening in terms of showing how easy it is to slide into dominant-culture-focused thinking about minority-culture content, and how some prejudice is lurking just below the surface.

Kuang continues to outdo herself. In Yellowface, she steps out from writing historically-inspired fantasy. Her morally-grey protagonist is a constant, yet in this story, the reader hardly ever sympathizes with June (unlike with Babel and The Poppy War trilogy). Yellowface is a masterpiece, a clever satire of the publishing industry and (what I assume is) her own experiences as an Asian American author. I highly recommend this book and will be revisiting it again and again.
