This book demonstrates Martin's abilities to craft a deep, comprehensive history as a background for his Song of Ice and Fire series. It presents as a compilation of accounts from several contributors to the history. However, it was hard for me to keep interested in the material and an audio book version helped to push me through to finish. Note that my attention drifted frequently, but it didn't seem to matter. It was very hard to keep track of all of the individuals and their relationships. There is a list of people as well as a family tree in the back of the print version. As someone not deeply interested in the history, I didn't spend the time trying to follow all of the cast of characters. I could see some of the source material used for the House of Dragons series - actually, the programs are way more interesting than the book. However, I'm probably not alone in thinking that Martin could have spent his time better working on Winds of Winter. Maybe he had to clear his mind of all of this other stuff first (although it looks like he intends to continue this history).
