Very good and enjoyable as someone who is exceedingly nerdy with the history and lore aspects of fiction. Special shoutout to good king jaeherys and alysayne, they are the goats. All the different timeperiods are fascinating in their own way and makes for a great read, unless you dont want HOTD spoiled.

And on the 20th day of the 11th Moon in the 2022nd Year After Aegon's Conquest, I finished this book.
What a delight this was! You can tell GRRM is just as much a nerd as the rest of us, and he revels in the richness of detail. What an imagination he has, and what fun he clearly had in weaving this epic history.
Quite a dour book at times, but doesn't lack for witty humour and cheeky commentary on the biased recording of history in our own world.
And George, you're not fooling anyone you scoundrel. If you start a chapter or a sentence with: "And on the 14th day of the 7th moon of 130 After the Conquest..." someone gonna die.
This is great for fans of Westeros.
Edit: Having sat on the book for 3 weeks, I do think he could have trimmed 100 pages or so of repetitive mundane regency/council stuff that was a bit samey across each reign. Not all of it, but there were definitely times when the detail was almost overwhelming. Not a huge complaint though!

Wasn’t expecting this to read like a history textbook. Oh well, the Targaryens are messy af.
