I really enjoyed this. It took me a while to read it because it is very dense, but the history is fascinating. It just wasn't a quick read. I will definitely pick up the next one.

I kind of enjoyed this more than the main series. I liked the chronology and the stakes felt lower. That being said, it did drag at some points.

I was interested in the Targaryens until I read this book. It doesn't cover the history of Jon Snow's parentage. It's all of so and so begat so and so.....

i liked aegons conquest, the dance of dragons (rhaenyra), the crumbs of baela & rhaena + her dragon the pink morning (after the dance of dragons), and reading about aegon iii was cool.
my favs are rhaenys the conqueror, rhaenys the queen who never was, rhaenyra the black queen, baela & rhaena, and a little bit of aegon iii.
i disliked the dragon fights being like 2 seconds long and then there’s like half a chapter devoted to a war i could not care less about. plus rhaenyras end felt so rushed and half-assed… anyway good book.
in conclusion i give this 4.5 stars ⭐️

I really liked using the textbook/history book format to world build. I think the HotD show runners were smart to adapt a section of this book. It’s a great source material. Love the ambiguity of what medieval people could realistically document about their time and history. Only lost a point bc history and textbooks can be a little boring ahaha. Took me 8 months to read this bad boy.

DNF after 5%.only two chapters. This is DRY AF. I have a masters degree in history and one can write a more compelling narrative that remains “historical” without making one’s readership nod off.

I’m saddened that I spent money on this. Anyone want my copy?
