Super interesting!! I loved that it read like a textbook and had different reports from different characters. While nothing was experienced from the perspective of the reader, it was still exciting to learn about the history of the Targaryens!

A well told history of the family of the Targaryen's, beginning from when Aegon the Conqueror lands in Westeros and crafts one kingdom from seven... although it may not be as simple as that.

The first section was very enjoyable and entertaining, but after that it got a bit repetitive. There were sections of very interesting characters, but then others where there just was not enough flesh to them, making it hard to invest with large parts of this. I would probably recommend reading this in sections, having a little break at the conclusion of each one. As it is a history spanning generations a break would enhance the experience, rather than detract, in my opinion.

Still worth the read. I am swiftly becoming a huge Westeros fan...

A very detailed world with lots of characters. Very plot driven and lots of action. It's interesting how who you think are main characters are never safe from meeting their demise. My interest waned towards the end but overall a good read.

2.5 This is a history book of a fictional world. All exposition. So many lists of names, it’s impossible to track them all. Only for the die-hards.

I was thoroughly entertained by this book. My only criticism is that although the semi-reliable retelling of the Targaryens history is very interesting, it can feel like a bit of an outline for these stories more than the actual stories themselves. Mostly I just wanted to know more about everything that happened, which I think is a good sign. Because of this I think this book is a great companion piece to the TV show House of the Dragon, which does zoom in a lot more on part of this book.
