An imposing 700+ pages of A Song of Ice & Fire lore, this historical archival piece is rewarding only to the flagship series most ardent follows.
Detailing the three hundred years of unbroken Targaeryn rule preceding Robert's Rebellion, it's an engrossing compendium of context that is seeped in such detail that at times it begins to read like non fiction. Through it's records of cruel kings and foolish lords it mirrors the now neutered British monarchy bloodied history of conquest and war. From the dance of the dragons echoing the war of the roses to the battle of the bastards being reminiscent of very real wars for succession that plagued Europe.
It's worthwhile. One of the largest books I've finished in the midst of my reading slump.

First third was amazing, second third was good, last third was meh.
took me long enough. felt like reading a history book about the greatest empire of westeros — the targaryens. really amazed me how they ruled for almost 300 years when in the book, they nearly killed each other to extinction. it was so bloody, i loved it.

Obsessed with House of the Dragon so had to read it. Pretty much my favorite book ever so far. Hope part 2 will come out asap..
The fact that there are people who have entire worlds and dynasties in their heads while also possessing the ability to write beautifully is so incredible to me. Say what you want about Mr. George but that man can paint a mental picture like no other. Not to even mention the illustrations in this copy… I need posters of them asap.
The way this book was written as a true history book complete with differing accounts and seemingly unbiased accounts unless otherwise noted… insane. This felt like a book someone in Westeros would use for a school project on the history of the continent.
