Even fierier and bloodier the second time around! On par with Storm of Swords as GRRM’s greatest work (if not better because of the B&W artwork that goes with it). Martin did what Tolkien couldn’t with the Silmarillion - albeit while procrastinating on his own ROTK.

So much lore and mythos to love, but Daemon Targaryen stands out as a fantasy character for the ages while Rhaenyra’s breaking-bad arc surely foretells the one Dany will play out in WoW and DoS. Can’t wait to see what the HBO machine does with a fully-finished Westerosi blueprint this time!

P.S. Jaeherys for President! Mushroom for Vice!

I think I would give this 4.5 if I could. I really enjoyed it and it exceeded my expectations. I thought very little of the historical non fiction approach to this but it actually just made the book, story and events concise enough to not get lost but still rich enough to feel immersed in this world. It was actually really interesting! But I wouldn't have picked this up if I hadn't heard about the history of westeros before, so it's definitely a second step to take when entering grr Martin's world.
I thought I had a defect because for a long time I was not able to find a good book, let alone finish it. Ironically, fire and blood yanked me out of my reading slump. It definitely affirmed my taste and thus self confidence not only in the types of books I reach out for but also in the number of books I am able to read.
Fantastic work, mildly life-altering, will be going back to ASOIAF for a second attempt!

Quiero mucho a Cregan Stark.

Well. I’m finally done reading my textbook and history of The Targaryen dynasty. I will say, that was quite refreshing and long, but…mama, I did it.

Obviously read this for HBO’s “House of the Dragon”. I started out reading on my Kindle and progressed to the audio version on Spotify. Oddly enough, I actually enjoyed it more as an audiobook and preferred it this way. Most likely due to the fact that this was dryer than a stale cracker, but my god…the incest, the family dramas, and the fight for a gyat. damned. metal CHAIR. I will say, this actually got me making faces like, “OH???” regarding family tea 🤣

I can live with GRRM never finishing ASOIAF if he just writes Blood and Fire

I listened to the audiobook, and it was entertaining, for the most part (the dance of dragons, with too many Targaryens with similar names, and too many dragons with similar names, was super confusing).

I would never read it, thought, as it would be too tedious (I was not aware that this book only covers about the first half of House Targaryen’s rule over Westeros, shame on me)- you really need to be a die hard GoT books fan to read 1000 pages of fake historical facts, covering about 140 years, and enjoy it.
