I had a background of the case before reading the book so I knew what to expect. However, it was a slow read that gave a lot of graphic detail of the crimes. I just never felt like reading more.

Michelle McNamara's work to hunt down the Golden State Killer is exceptional. Her dedication to the work and her writing style make the book an engaging read that made me want to keep reading long into the night despite the content. The sections compiled after her death were done with so much respect for her and her work show how much she meant to her friends, loved ones, and colleagues.

I've put off reading this book for a long time. I consider myself a light true-crime fan, but I knew who Michelle McNamara is, and I thought I knew that she had done work on the Golden State Killer case. But really the work she did was so much deeper, and this book is an incredible piece of investigative work.

Because this is investigative nonfiction, and the span of the case is so vast, the book can drive a bit at times, but don't let that deter you from reading. The details of the case are important, and it's well worth pushing through the slew of details to get to the emotional meat of the book.

If you read or listen to this book you will see the care and detail that Michelle McNamara put into her work, and it's not hard to tell why so many detectives found it easy to trust and confide in her. Ultimately, this book is a love letter, to the tireless professional and armchair detectives, Michelle's community, and through her friends and husbands, to Michelle herself.
