Elephant is brave to try the slop. The flies surrounding the bowl of slop add to the narrative tension. I won't spoil the end -- you'll have to read it yourself to find out if he likes it or not.
My 11-month-old nephew has this book, and I read it (and read it... and read it...) to him without having read any of Mo Willems' books before. It's so great! The illustrations are simple but fun and emotive. I also like that it taught appreciation for other peoples' opinions in it. I'm keeping these books in mind for my own children.
Some of what I liked most about this book are the illustrations where Piggie and Elephant try the slop. I adore how colorful they become as a result of tasting slop. I also love that even though Elephant wants nothing to do with slop (he really reminds me of my partner who is a VERY fussy eater) he still tries it because he really likes Piggie.
Piggie just made a big batch of her favorite food, slop. She invites her friend, Gerald the elephant, to try some, but he's not so sure . . .
I've heard a lot in recent weeks about Mo Willems, but had never picked up any of his books.
This was fun, and I really enjoyed the bright, silly illustrations. The flies around the bowl of slop were a nice touch. This is a good story to show picky eaters, as, even though Gerald doesn't like the slop, he at least tried it.
