i am really struggling where i stand with this book because there are parts i really enjoyed and others that were just intensely confusing, felt inconsistent, or i just didn't enjoy. i definitely really loved the structure of the story and thought the acts and scene inspiration was really fun and unique for a book like this, i also really enjoyed lev and sasha and the political and social scheming aspect. i think the latter half of the book lost me with strange dialogue, telling us one thing about a character and than showing them acting inconsistent with that, unexplained magic system, and the random coming back to life and alliance shifting. i think there's a great and interesting retelling buried in here despite having two sets and romeo's and juliet's and some things that just didn't add up or weren't my style. also the over reliance on the bridge got soooooo iritating by the end like i feel like it just took so much away from the characters and their own intelligence and agency- i think it only really made sense in the beginning and just got agitating at the end but i digress.

Holy thesaurus Batman!

The only word I can think of to describe the writing is pompous. Like listening to someone who reallllly needs you to know that they’ve gone to college and are way smarter than you are so they use the biggest words possible for every single word.

I literally couldn’t focus on the story because the word choice and sentence level writing was so distracting.

It took me way too long to finish this but I did love it. Some parts in the middle were a bit slow but I think Blake translated the vibe of Romeo and Juliet well. I felt the same frustration reading this as I did the play. Loved the ending though.

this started out so promising but then really fell flat :(

It felt like so much was going on, but nothing was progressing the plot. The world building was definitely lacking & there was next to no explanation of the witches’ powers/how they worked. Some minor characters/plot points were explained in such great detail while main characters/plot points were ignored & lazily explained away.

I really enjoyed the dialogue & setting/premise but it over-promised & under delivered in actually conveying a meaningful story. While I really looked forward to the
Sasha/Lev
parts, I couldn’t care less about the remaining characters by the end.
