I love this series - Le Guin is so intentional. Earthsea is a crystal clear mirror of our world, exposing all of humanity's weaknesses and beauty and hopes. The Earthsea books are simple and yet so rich and wonderful

It's a book that is commenting on something that I didn't like as much as the author did

Years after the events of the Tombs of Atuan, Sparrowhawk has become Archmage in Roke. A young Prince, Arren, comes to Roke with a message of encroaching darkness, magic dying out of the world. The two of them journey to the outer reaches of the archipelago to confront a dark hole that is draining joy from the world.

I love this series. Maybe because I read them first when I was exactly the right age for them— around eleven or twelve. Reading them now as an adult, I especially love the afterwords that LeGuin has included with each book. Wonderful.

"Endurance may outlast hope" (p. 239).

"The poet Roethke said, 'I learn by going where I have to go.'  It is a sentence that has meant a great deal to me.  Sometimes it tells me that by going where it is necessary for us to go, by following our own path, we learn our way through the world.  Sometimes it tells me that we can only learn our way through the world by just starting out and going" (pp. 253-254, in the Afterword).
