I wouldn’t quite call this a “standalone” book since it borrows several characters and eve events in the background from the Slough House Series.

That being said, if you have read one or two in the slough house series at least, I’d highly recommend. The espionage is smart and not too slow. Drops enough hints to let you know most of the twists, but definitely still manages to surprise.

Listened to the audiobook on this one. The narrator is perfect, but there were definitely several parts where I wished I had the actual book in my hands so I could read something twice and make sure I knew what was going on.

If you love the characters of Slough House, and want to know more of the back story - this is superb.

I loved discovering ‘Miles Brinsley’s’ early life as a spook in Berlin, and as each element is revealed it’s a bitter sweet story. Despite lots of threads and timelines running at once, and you feeling at times you’re going lose complete track of the plot, it is all pulled together expertly at the end.

Thoroughly recommended for fans of the books, or just those who’ve watched the TV show and want to get a little more immersed in the Slow Horses world.
