Ok so the cult part was really cool and creative but everything else... Meh.
The writing I really did not like:
- " "Vibe Girl!" I shout, so loudly that it echoes off the trees and Aura finally falls silent. Everyone around us remains calm, clearly realizing we'll all be here until this is finished. I don't think anyone expected this to be an easy completion.
"Painted streaks and stolen moments," I say, my eyes focusing on her while I tell her all of things I want her to know. "I was jealous of every moment I watched Hawk with you. Even Bethie, whenever she flashed your friendship in my face when we first met."
"No," Aura cries, her lips trembling while she listens to what I'm saying. "Don't do this."
"You're not the same girl I met that first night at the club." My heart thunders in my chest, salt slipping across my tongue with every word. "You're so much more than that now. So much stronger. So beautiful and flawless in your power." "
Reading this I just wanted to laugh.
- "It reminds me of myself, before I met Ruby. When I wanted so badly to make Hawk happy. But his happiness and our self-love should have never been based around his acceptance of us. Our own happiness and strength is derived from ourselves. No one else."
I guess it's a nice message... But I can't take stuff like this seriously.
- "The mark of The Nation now drowned out by who we are. Our own identities, our own victories, our own relationship and love for each other despite our pasts screaming differently. [...] Aura and I found our own identities. Corruption and poison were our catalysts, transforming us into the people we were always meant to become. Butterflies and wildflowers evolved from darkness into something transcendent. Electric. Powerful. Capable."
This quote is from the very last page and like ... What. I really don't like thess weird, preachy, tumblr-poet-esque descriptions.
Also, "vibe girl" is such a weird nickname.

Am currently SOL on books this month. It’s fine it’s fine. Maybe I’m in a slump? But I was half half enjoying it til the writing got too repetitive and overly descriptive (with the sameish descriptions) for my tastes. I wasn’t a fan of the writing. Beyond that, I wish the blurb was clearer that the premise is religious trauma. There was so much of it in every page. My audio also didn’t have any CW and pretty much opened with public pedophilia just a heads up for those listening on audio faulty audio for some reason. Really just wasn’t for me.

This was much darker than I thought it would be, but in no way darker than my normal reads. I just went in thinking it would be a light sapphic romance with some darkish vibes, but it was more than that.
The Nation... a crazy cult. Aura grew up in this life, and we picked up again after she left. She's best friends with Bethie, and Hawke is her man, but all is not quite what it seems. There is a lot more to this crazy web than she thought.
The connection between Ruby and Aura is electric, and the suspense and darkness surrounding the cult in which Aura grew up is very relevant.
Yes, some purple prose, (for yall haters of that) but I loved it, and it gave me the feels in all the ways.

This one sounded quite good, but I really didn‘t like it…Was close to dnf-ing several times. At this point, I‘m just proud that I made it all the way through.
