You know that feeling when you find a book that makes you go through a variation of emotions, a book that you can't put down and a book that makes you fall in love with the world and the characters? This was that book! I DEVOURED this book, I INHAILED this book and at times I wanted to throw this book through the GODDAMMNED window! In other words, perfect!
I'm aware that a lot of people really hate the MMC in this book, and a lot of people DNF this book because of all the psychological abuse the FMC goes through. And I totally get that this book is not for everyone. But it is marketed as a dark romantasy, and the author warns about this in the content/trigger warnings. She also tells us flat out that the MMC is morally grey. But I think that part of the problem today is that there are thousands of books marked with "dark content" and "morally grey" characters that are actually not that dark and the characters are actually not that morally grey.
In this book the MMC, Theon, is actually morally grey. He is at times morally black. He does and says things that are very questionable and he does so for his own gain. But I really love his POV chapters and I do actually love his character in this book. There is reason for a lot of his actions, and there is reason for the way that he is. But at most times he is just as insecure and unsure of what to do or what to say as the FMC is, and I really love that the author gives us a very flawed character in Theon that has a lot of learning and growing to do in order to become the man we see small glimpses of.
The FMC, Tessa, is very "damaged" and all of her trauma from the past makes her act and say things that blindside the MMC. Both in good and bad ways. I love that we get a very clear image of why she is the way that she is - while she is at most times totally unaware of this herself. The way that her upbringing has affected every aspect of her life is portrayed beautifully on page but at the same time it is devastating to see that she is neither able to help herself or get help form the people around her. This gives us the possibility of massive character growth in the books to come, which I really hope the author follows through on.
We also get sprinkled in bits and pieces of humor and cute moments between the main characters and the banter is top tier. Who knew an argument over flip-flops could make me laugh out loud? And for the love of god - can someone bring Tessa pizza and doughnuts? Like really?? IYKYK.
This book also brings top tier side characters - yes I'm looking at you Luka and Axel! And I can't wait for their POV chapters in the next book.
I highly recommend this book for you if you love flawed characters, actual enemies to lovers, intricate world building and being so frustrated out of your mind that you want to rip your hair out! 10/10!

I’m interested enough to read the next book and hoping it helps make this first book make sense

I’m confused, frustrated… and still weirdly hooked.
I honestly don’t even know how to feel about Rain of Shadows and Endings. My thoughts and emotions are all over the place because I’ve never read a book that frustrated me as much as this one did — and yet, I couldn’t stop reading.
What the hell is going on???
Tessalyn frustrates me. Theon frustrates me. And somehow… I love them both? I’m so confused

I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it so much, I feel like this is the best Jack Romance slow burn. I have seen a very long time, it doesn’t feel too triggering, but you still feel complete anger towards the male main character in a way that doesn’t make you feel like he is S*A* her. I also really like how they portrayed her breaking point and it was so eerily realistic to how someone would react in that situation that I could feel in my soul
