I'm A Fan follows the inner thoughts of an unknown speaker as she blunders through the muddying mires of toxic relationships and obsession.
I did not like this book. That is not to say it was a bad book. Just that it wasn't for me personally. The protagonist is very unlikeable and quite hostile in her thoughts which given the topics she discusses is understandable, but at the same time feels a little hypocritical given her lack of morality. But that is also what makes her real. As I said, this is not a bad book, it has a lot going for it. But the unconscious train of thought style of writing, the jumping around in what little plot there was and the lack of any sort of ending really bothered me. The story just kind of stops, but it isn't like she learns anything or changes her ways, if anything the ending portrays the protagonist as continuing down the path of unscrupulous behaviour to do something I would consider morally rotten rather then just grey. I will give this book one thing, it certainly made me think and maybe that's all it ever wanted to achieve.

Reading this felt like watching reality TV. Unfortunately, I don’t like watching reality TV.

The premise was very intriguing, and I am generally a fan of unlikeable characters. I really liked the commentary on race and class at first, but eventually it started to sound like Patel was saying the same thing each time in very slightly different ways. The prose reads like slam poetry at times and jury’s still out on whether or not I enjoyed it. I did laugh at a few of the chapter titles, though, they felt very Tumblr-esque. I see myself potentially returning to this book in the future in case I missed the hype the first time around.

i'm a fan .... of this book even though it took me nearly a year to finish it!  really i read the first half right after i got it last spring and then kinda forgot i hadn't finished it.  oh well.  very messy, very funny, short chapters ... it's great!  features the best chapter titles i've ever seen, too.

This one wasn't for me. I think I'm just too old for this now - I just see a troubled woman who would be incredibly hard to be around, much less be friends with. It felt like nothing happened, while still feeling endless.
