I love an obsession / stalker storyline & unlikable characters, so this seemed like a perfect fit for me!
I was “obsessed” with the initial 30 pages of this short novel, I couldn’t believe this was a debut novel. There was such insightful, beautifully written prose about race, class & Euro / white centric colonialism in these 30 pages.
I loved the writing style & there were so many brilliant minor details throughout the story, i.e. the main character is referred to in lower case as they devolve further until obsession / losing their identity.
However, the book began to feel tedious after 50 pages & I nearly DNFed several times. The book just became to repetitive to me without the repetition adding to the plot & the main character’s struggles began to feel more superficial since we had such a strong impact at the beginning of the book and I didn’t feel like that same character impact carried throughout the story.
I feel like this would’ve been better if it was shortened to be a novels or character backgrounds were more flushed out to add dimension to the obsessive behavior.
The ending is abrupt & ambiguous, which is my biggest pet peeve in any literature genre.

Decent idea, poor execution… I can totally see where this books could have gone in terms of concept, writing and layout … the elements of ambiguity and unknown around the characters could’ve actually worked if carried out more naturally … but they just made the characters out of reach for the reader … and, personally, essay-like chapters just aren’t my thing:/
