The Immortals by Paul Stewart, Chris Riddell

Suspenseful and surprising, too violent at times, but really engaging. It gives conclusion to some story threads (not surprising, since this was supposed to be the end of the series). A really good one from the series after a few mediocre ones. A bit longish, but full of wonderful (and sometimes awful) things. Can't wait to start the last trilogy. A great ending.

On rereading this I'm downgrading its star rating because while it did tie together a lot of loose ends in the series, and it did have the same magical creativity, lovable characters, and strong plot that defined this series, I realized this time around that the final solutions came from outside the main character. Not outside the storyline, mind you, so much better than many other books, (and almost certainly better than I could do), but still, the main character was not so much a hero as an axis. The edge and its history swirled around Nate catching him up in its thralls and spitting him back out, almost unscathed.

I know that Stewart and Riddell were leaving the storyline open for a new series, but since this was meant to be a finale I felt that the MC and his choices should have had more an impact on the ending.

An incredible ending that sufficiently wrapped up so many stories yet still suffered from the same bloated descriptions of the other books. The series as a whole is very entertaining and very fun it is just the over-describing that prevents it from truly excelling.

Super fun extension of the worldbuilding set up in the previous three trilogies, but gets a little too up its own ass with the callbacks and character beats at the end. Feels contrived to have all the previous protagonists contribute that heavily to the finale as well as goes on the explain too much about what happened to them after their adventures. As far as I'm concerned Twig's story ends with him heading towards Riverrise and we never found out if he made it or what he found there if he did.

A great conclusion and tie into all of the books that came before it. A great use of prior characters that really makes the story feel like a fully immersive universe tying elements into it from across the entire series even back to the beginning. Off to the last 3 books, this series has been a wonderful and amazing ride.

read this for the first time when I was 12 and now again at 21... this book and series for sure had a formative impact on my creative style and it's so much more complex and lovely than I could've appreciated back then. I'm just glad it exists I think
