There's not really a plot and it seemed pretty random at times.

The Topeka school offera very insightful, moving prose that explores the rage of middle class white men, the resentments that fuel American politics, and the degradation of critical discourse. It suffers from the occasional eruption of the esoteric vocabulary of literary theory costing it that fifth star from me. Otherwise, It is a thought provoking book well worth reading.

I didn't care for this book. The plot was confusing or nonexistent.

I loved this meandering pretentious book! I was finding it so satisfying the way small seemingly throwaway details kept popping back up, and then felt very letdown by the fact the threads of the stories did not connect in any similarly satisfying way

On a sentence-by-sentence, scene-by-scene level, I really like Lerner's writing style, which is densely packed with information yet also elegant and easy to read. This story, however, is wildly disjointed, shifting perspective and time frame with every chapter. In the end, I'm left feeling a bit bewildered.
