I don't even know the number of stars to give because I'm mad.
Like a tantruming toddler mad.
So 4 is good for now.
Not really spoilers, but kind of..
...
..
.
I sighed the most dramatic sigh and slammed the book closed with a very loud thump. My husband laughed and said "didn't like the ending?"
Honestly I feel numb, and s3xually frustrated for the characters lol. I'm not sure what I think. I enjoyed the journey- but the destination was unexpected! After all that build up and back and forth that's how Lauren chose to end this book?!?
There were a lot of repetitive moments and there was no fantasy elements, so that definitely is knocking a star off for me. Tropes were there but no capitalism on the tropes! 1 horse, 1 bed, enemies to holding hands- not lovers, no action! I don't need a ton of smut but I need something to happen in 2 books.
...

.
I'm looking forward to book 3 because I am hoping it'll be spicy, give us some spice Lauren! And angsty and I love a good spicy angst story. All the tension and far off glances- I'm ready for it. But come on man!
Definitely not predictable. I think that's all I have for now.

This may be my favorite book out of the series.
Honestly I can't even say why, while some things on the story telling in this one actually bothered me, it was still so insanely addictive and I couldn't put it down at all, which is why I still choose to give 5 stars.
I absolutely loved the setting in this book( I'm trying to word it in a way without spoilers)
And as much as I loved the one in the first book, and even tho this is only the second one it was still so... refreshing in a way? Again it's hard to put it into words!
But also the tension... again.. it drives you insane ima. Good way haha.
In my opinion a perfect follow up of the first book!

Okay but… Paedyn in Reckless? That’s the version I needed. No more masks, no more pretending. She’s raw, real, and finally lets herself feel—and ouch, the pain hit hard.
After escaping the slums, she’s stuck in the scorches with way too much time to think—and that’s when it really sinks in: she’s completely alone. But she pushes through and reaches Dor… only to realize she's still not safe (thank you, Kitt, for the 20K bounty).
She tries to start over. But then Kai shows up and—game over. This man?? Genuinely top 5 book boyfriends material. Gentleman in a world full of boys. I didn’t like him at first, but once he opened up? Oh, I got it. He’s THAT guy—the one you marry.
The beginning felt a bit repetitive, but when Kai and Pae reunite, the story takes off.
And the poppy field scene?? I will never recover. That kiss? 10/10. Actually, 11.
Kai + Pae = soulmates. Through every mess, they’re each other’s anchor. And that ending?? I’m unwell.

🎧 Audiobook!
Oof. I wanted to like this so bad. The first book was fun and kept me turning the pages to find out what was next (even if predictable) but this one had me speeding up the audio just to be done. Making me question if book 3 is worth the time now.
This book was 80% filler with “how many times can the forced proximity trope be used” and 20% of new information/backstory. This could’ve been a novella and saved us all the wasted pages. Honestly think I’d rather walk through the Scortches myself than have read this one - cause that’s how painfully boring this book was. The few crumbs of new info and twists sprinkled in were not worth it, especially with how predictable they were.
Hoping that book 3 will live up to the hype it had to finish out the trilogy.
