Hmm this is a hard book to review. I really admire the book and the story and Firdaus and yeah just the commentary it's making on society and the value of women. I think it's really powerful. I even like the flowery language and the circular events. I think it's a little daydreamy at times though. Like sometimes I just wanted to skip ahead of the la la la ness of the internal thoughts

I thought this book was very well written, and the different POVs tied together really well.

powerful in the sense she was able to choose her own story but at the cost of
sex work and a death sentence
? an ending so realistic it hurts for the ppl who want the heroine to render the patriarchy useless, just once; i felt numb and dejected afterward. realistic, raw and a great short read. Not to mention the fact that the narrative is a really insightful look into what circumstances women in Egypt face.. and with El Saadawi framing Firdaus as a representation of all Egyptian women's experiences under the patriarchy... yes. also "revolutionary men with principles were not really different from the rest. [...] revolution for them is like sex for us. something to be abused. something to be sold."
