Hannah Kent has such a gift. The Good People is one of the top ten best books I have ever read, and completely unique. I’ve only read 3/4 of Devotion, but I need to put it down and decide if I want to come back and finish it. Beautifully written, but as other reviews have mentioned, the twist left me skimming ahead to see if some semblance of the story I had been following would return. Might be the teen in me who read and enjoyed a lot of historical fiction and can’t quite wrap my head around historical fiction with the addition of the supernatural. The first half of the book was perfectly terrifying in that gothic Hannah Kent way, the descriptions of the sea voyage were absolutely claustrophobic and maddening, but things just got weird.

beautiful beautiful writing but i did kinda lose interest towards the end… i think id have preferred a slower story of the first half and maybe the second half being over quicker but thats just me… still very cute i would have loved to have something like this to read when i was younger

When I started out with this book, I was kind of bored because of the detailed descriptions of nature. It wasn't really my style.
However, I was heavily invested and emotional by the end of the book. I have grown to enjoy their almost poetic style of writing. The character development was also beautifully done.

contain spoilers: While this book is well written and true to Kent’s beautiful writing style. it is so incredibly sad and bitterly disappointing to read a queer story like this written by a queer person when it hold a lot of homophobic messages. On the surface this seems like a lovely unrequited love story.
While I’m sure it was not the authors intention, I really wished that this book was different. There are countless narratives of LGBT hardship, we don’t need more.

Such a beautiful book. The emotion leaps off the page and I was stunned by the beauty of the language. It’s fills the heart and breaks it at the same time.
