This takes place at the end of season 2 of the show. It is focused on Spock's doubts about where he belongs after Michael and Discovery have left for the future. He ruminates on whether he should stay on the Enterprise as a crew member during his time off after his last mission. In the interim, The Enterprise embarks on a mission involving peace efforts with the Klingon Empire. It was great to be able to see how L'Rell is dealing with the unrest within her empire with a significant amount of pushback because of her past with Ash Tyler and her relationship with Starfleet. There is some action as well as a lot of moments between Spock and Captain Pike as he accompanies the Enterprise on its mission while off duty. It was interesting to see L'Rell trust Spock to help her in her endeavor for peace. It is clear that many people feel Spock is someone of value who is both objective when necessary but also trustworthy. I feel this helped spotlight Spock's level of integrity and why he is such an asset to a crew. I feel like this is definitely worth picking up if you wanted to see more of Spock's inner thoughts as well as the aftermath of the "destruction" of the Discovery that the show didn't get the time to explore.

This is an entertaining and relatively well done collection of Star Trek stories. The stories will be most interesting to fans of Star Trek: Discovery and assume that the reader is familiar with its characters and events. The two stories contained in this volume relate to events taking place after the second and first season respectively. The reversed chronological order is a bit weird but does not really any confusion.

Not bad at all. Definitely worth a read but it doesn’t fill in any major gaps in surprising ways.

I love these books Kirsten Beyer writes so much! It is such a nostalgia trip. But the main reason I love them so much is that she drives the characters and plots well into the future. I loved seeing some of the side characters finally getting their own voices. Patel's was beautiful as she comes into grip with what it really means to be a leader and a Starfleet officer. My favorite character development was definitely Gwyn's. The mirroring of what she goes through and what women have gone through for centuries past was so inspiring. The thing that I love most about these novels, especially in the latest ones are their morals, the reflections of what is right, what is wrong, and why we choose the paths that are before us.

I enjoy this new era of Star Trek and I am anxious to read the stories that come out along side of it. I have read all the comics, but I have yet to break in to the novels. This was a pretty cool short series that ties in to the events of the show and here we spend time with the Enterprise crew with this story centering around Spock. Spock is my all time favorite Trek character and I love what Peck brings to the character. I look forward to more of these from IDW.
