Some interesting space naval combat and aliens in this one. Interesting society and it's good scifi in that it does the "what if" and then runs with it. A little slow to get going and there are traumatic parts to so e characters early life's that I don't enjoy a whole lot but I really an interesting read for military scifi.

The thinking mans military space opera? Perhaps. It's got all your favourite military space opera stuff, realistic space battles, high G maneuvers, ground battles, plus a bunch of that kissy-face romance stuff and social maneuverings.

See, I'm deep, I don't just like warhammer style military space opera.

I listened to this and enjoyed the journey, though it felt disjointed at times with the two protagonists. Also wished for more descriptions of the alien races to visualize them better.

Fun space opera action

... nah.

Look, I could have got through the whole thing. I mostly read the first half, and I liked that there were two quite different narrative points of view. But I really couldn't muster the energy to be excited about a labyrinthine military bureaucracy that was clearly going to have some issues now that their rulers had all fallen off the perch.

So, no. I have spent as many hours on this as I feel the need. Which is a bit sad because I've liked some of Williams' short stories, and I understand that this is quite the epic series. But there are a lot of other books out there.

One of my very favorite space opera series, and one of the very few I've gone back to reread. Great characters, great politics, wonderfully imagined universe! (Personally, also love the authors' bent towards real physics over the Star Trek-ish "beep-boop-beep-techno-gibberish-followed-by-hand-waving" approach. Not that I'm biased.) Looking forward to revisiting the rest of the series. Highly recommended

I feel like I've seen a lot of "Roman Empire... in SPAAAAACCCCCEEEEEEEEE!", but much less "collapse of the British Empire... in SPAAAAACCCCCEEEEEEEEE!". So I really enjoyed this one. Well-plotted, strong characterization, uses the sociopolitical framework and the aliens to great advantage. Feel like there are a lot of alien species off-screen still. Excited to read about the fall of the Dread Empire.
