Really solid military SF story. It really captures a military stuck in stasis.

The only thing I actually disliked was the secondary's character origin story. It didn't bring anything to the main plot other than padding.

Very entertaining, very human. Takes a surprisingly long time to get to the actual military-competence-porn of this, which is actually a very nice change!

There are also hints dropped throughout for a... thing... and I cannot tell if I'm clever because I figured it out, or dumb because it took me so long to figure it out.

What a book! If I had read the back of the book and only the first chapter, I would never have picked it up or been interested in reading it. I am so glad I did. Highly recommend.

Story: In the big picture: A future world where multiple species are fighting for power. The real story? An everyday man overlooked for the promotion he deserves. A female space pilot with a big attitude and doesn't take dirt from anyone. Side characters you would find in the office meeting or university bar or country club dinner, except now in space. And how their stories collide while out in space, the political and military struggle rises. Space opera with character and depth.

Characterization: First person from multiple perspectives. All the main characters are 3-dimensional, very human personalities and develop fully throughout the book. It's like Star Wars, if it had been told from Luke, Leia and Han's perspective.

Language: very clear, very human, lots of dialogue and inner-dialogue. Lots of space opera terminology, but nothing too hard sci-fi. Descriptions of action and events detailed but not drawn-out or overwhelming. Holds your attention and keeps you reading more.

Frame: Most of the book takes place in space aboard military spaceships, and some scenes take place on Terra (aka Earth) or other foreign planets. Time is future, but not too far future. Atmosphere varies from dark, military to comedic romance, to sarcastic kick-butt action. A little something for every reader without being too much of one thing.

This is book one of a trilogy (plus side novels). Hard to put down and leaving you wanting to find out what happens next. Highly recommend!

This was a mixed bag of enjoyment. There is a
small part in the beginning that was fun, and then
somewhere beyond the middle of the book, there is a fairly
exciting surprise battle that was interesting, but
most of the rest was banal and seemed to had to
do more with political advancement of a couple of
characters than anything to do with thrilling
storylines. And then it takes a while to realize
there are flashbacks that are not actually made
obvious to the reader so you might go 'huh?' a
couple of times before you get what is going on.

Meh...I do not think I will pursue Book #2. Not
recommended.

Great. Good hard science fiction with engaging characters. Enough technical details of space and fighting without just being an action trope. And somehow the lead character is just compelling. I have no idea why.
