This book struggled with confusing world building, muddy explanations, and convoluted timelines. Lots of story paths were not followed up on. It is such a cool concept to see a timeline where
Spoiler abolitionists and suffragists are unified and gain the vote together,
I wish we actually felt more of that timeline. The 1992/murder timeline added confusion to an already complicated plot and I think the story would have been more clear without it.

I liked some of the underlying message,
Spoiler that we are always close to a change and individual people can make big change,
but the handmaids tale influences and darkness in general was a lot for me.

I really enjoyed that the authors note talked about what she changed for the book from our real timeline.

Finally, the audiobook narrator sounds like a kid and it was really difficult to match with the intense main character who was supposed to be in her 50s. In addition, the narrator’s reading style was not a fit for me (Lots of heavy breathing and swallows in the recording and her mouth sounded dry).

Now, this is one badass piece of truly feminist fiction. Recommended.

A novel about time travelling feminists in a historical editing war with time travelling misogynists is a little on the nose but I still enjoyed it.

Newitz grounds the premise in emotion derived from her own trauma, which brings a resonance to the characters they may not have had.

A fabulously creative story that intertwines history and fiction. I love how this book is full of women our stories and our resilience. I also think it shows the pain victims of abuse cope with the violence against them. It also clearly showcases how violence against women has surrounded and shaped our lives. I also really appreciate how it shows the war waged on women from birth and the necessity of fighting back and the gay areas that arise when we do.
