I can see how this book would appeal to those new to the thriller genre but as someone who has read a lot of thriller in the past, I found the storyline to be generic and not memorable.
The general plot is that something devastating happened to the main protagonist and they left their hometown as soon as they could only to have to return years down the road for some reason.
In this particular book, the main protagonist is Sylvie, the younger of 2 sisters. Her older sister goes missing and is found dead. The case goes cold. Sylvie moves away after she graduates then 16 years later has to return home to help care for her ill and alcoholic mother. She starts to uncover the secrets that lead to her sister’s death.
It wasn’t a bad book, it was engaging and was a page turner.
I did find it to be predictable and at times found the FMC to be quite insufferable.
I would still recommend to anyone looking to get into the thriller genre as this is a good way to dip your toes in.

This was fine - certainly better than the other book from this author I DNFed. I thought the writing and character work was pretty good, especially the relationships between Sylvie, her mother, and her aunt. That's what I ended up taking away from this more than the mystery/thriller elements.

This book is super predictable. Like I feel the big reveal towards the end is meant to be shocking but I was like, duh? I don't think this is a case of me reading too many thrillers, this just felt super obvious. And then I wasn't a fan of the killer reveal because it felt over-expositiony and also obvious. Usually that would make for a two star book for me but I did come away enjoying parts of this. Maybe a 2.75 rounded up.

This cover is GORGEOUS, if inaccurate. She was found in snow, not water. But I love eerie watery covers so w/e!

As a whole this story seemed like stories I have read before, however, the writing style was very good. I enjoyed the narrative and was eventually really drawn in to this because of the writing.

It was hard for me to get into, I almost put it down but it does pick up, so I do suggest staying with it if you feel like giving up. I enjoyed the way to author tackled some difficult topics including difficult relationships, obsession and abuse.

Overall a pretty good debut!

* I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Even though the 'secrets' were pretty obvious, it was still a good read.
3.5 Stars.

This is one of those books that just blows me away on every level, the sentence, the paragraph, the chapter, each one pulling you deeper into the story and pulling you along. Based on the myth of Demeter and Persephone, it examines the depths of despair that a mother feels when her daughter dies. The way that Megan Collins writes about this is just gutting and beautiful and the plot is tight and compelling. This is a must read and a must not put down!

I honestly can’t decide how I feel about this book...I debated whether to give it three stars or two. I really enjoyed most of it but the end of chapter 24 and then the next couple chapters took a turn that I thought might happen earlier in the book but it seemed like such a gross idea that I hoped they wouldn’t take it that direction but they did and so it left me unsure of how I felt about the book after those last few chapters

I hardly read thrillers so I don't have an opinion on this having a "tired" plotline like some reviews say, but I did personally enjoy it. I can't believe this is her debut, I thought the writing and the flow felt natural and the prose was beautiful. I felt connected to the characters and their pain was palpable. I want to say Tommy was absolutely disgusting and grimy and just yuck. The murderer was not who I thought it was but it definitely made sense. There was so much sadness and grief but I thought it was well done. Tears were shed on my part.

Solid 3 stars. The plot was pretty ho-hum (dead older sister, messed up mom, messed up younger sister, cancer caretaking, suspicious boyfriend) and has been done to death, but the writing style and characters were overall good - I’d definitely read another book by her, but wouldn’t rush to recommend this one.

Received an ARC but didn’t get around to it until after its publication date.

I don’t usually mind guessing the ending early on but I think it started to get a little melodramatic halfway through and that kind of tampered down the suspense.
