I listened to the audio book. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it more if I'd read the book with the beautiful illustrations.

3.5

This was a pretty fun book.

'The Doldrums' follows Archer, a boy who has always been curious about most things. Ever since he heard about the disappearance of about his "famous explorers" grandparents, he has a feeling that there is more to being a Helmsley than sitting at home. Follow Archer and his friends as they come together with a plan to escape their homes and seek adventure elsewhere.

Keeping in mind the intended audience for this book, I think readers who enjoy the genre would find the adventure, friendship, and mischiefs within this book really enjoyable. There were some parts of the book that weren't as interesting, so I did end up lightly skimming through some paragraphs. That being said, the illustrations kept me going. The illustrations in this book are the epitome of peculiar and whimsical that tie this book together beautifully.

Another adorable story! For some reason, I got this mixed up with "Meet the Dullards," so I was a little confused for the first portion of the book. But I loved this story about the Helmsleys, which immerses you in their world yet leaves you with questions. The other thing I noted about this book was that I had a distinct narrator in my head, sort of a British accent. I loved Archer's quest for adventure in improbable ways, and how Oliver and Adelaide support it. I also hope that we get another book in this world, to answer some of the threads left hanging.

THE DOLDRUMS is the perfect mix of imagination, unforgettable adventure, and friendship

Such a good unique cast of characters! I loved the madcap interactions. The last few chapters were exciting but ultimately a bit of a let down for me and my daughter. We were hoping for more of the expedition.

Nicholas Gannon's The Doldrums is about a character named Archer B. Helmsley and is quite the tactile read. Read my full review here Link goes live 3/24/2017
