This book was a gripping read; I can definitely understand the hype behind it. I was rooting for the characters and keen to uncover the mysteries of the archipelago filled with both mythical creatures and humans. It was lovely to see the friendship develop between the two main characters as their journey progressed.

Whilst the narrative had a good pace, there were elements of the story that I felt could have been elaborated on. There were occasions where I would have liked to hear more about the creatures, so found myself flicking back to the bestiary at the front pages to read more of a description. With that said, the world was vivid enough that I found myself picturing it as if it was on the big screen! A good variety of tear-jerking, edge-of-my-seat and humorous moments.

This is definitely a great book for a read-aloud and one that I can't wait to share. Katherine Rundell uses some ambitious vocabulary that - great to expose children to. I'm very excited to continue reading, as it is due to be a series!

Very endearing characters,  brisk pace and prose that's both easy to grasp but artistically written.  This is a fine fantasy adventure story.  The only misstep in my opinion was the real-world historical figures that are referenced in the plot and become quite important. It took me out of it,  and reminded me that what I was reading was for kids,  and the twist was supposed to make kids be like "wow I know who that famous historical figure is! awesome!". But it just seemed cheap to me.  I wish the villain was more developed as a character, because by the time they were introduced the book was already basically over and their motivations were vague.  But the story succeeds in making you care about the main characters and their friendship is believable and heartwarming.

I want to spend more time in the world that Katherine built. It is magical and beautiful and heartbreaking. You will laugh, you will cry, it’s beautiful. The illustrations are beautiful. This book is a masterpiece!
