awesome book. very well written - sort of cormac mccarthy like in it's descriptions and prose. apparently a real legend - there are many web sites devoted to the story of Ned Kelly and even a movie, but this is a fictionalized account of his short life and the way the Irish lived in the 'colonial' Australia of the 1860's. very engrossing book - made you feel what it must have been like to live in the time period with all the corruption and poverty.
Maybe at a different time I might have the patience to read this. I like the medium of journal entries poorly written (purposefully) as if by uneducated protagonist, but at every turn these people are steeped in poverty, hunger, ignorance, deceit, ugliness, dirt....
I seem to feel that too many people are slogging through this right now. I need me some beauty, light, truth....
Now I know about Ned Kelly. Now I know more about Ned Kelly than I feel I need to.

This was a well written adaptation of the memoirs of Ned Kelly. The author did a wonderful job of telling the story, while keeping the integrity of it. There were some spots where it was slower, but that’s life sometimes. Overall, a very important book to read.
Despite the title, a fictionalized account of Ned Kelly, Australia's most infamous bushranger. Takes a while to get into the cadence of Ned's writing, but I thought this was pretty interesting and now I'd like to learn more about the actual man and his gang.

One of my favorite books. Assigned for an Australian Literature class while I was studying abroad in Brisbane, I was unfamiliar with both Peter Carey and Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly is a famous and fascinating Australian outlaw/folk hero and this book is riveting.
a beautiful book, and, it seems, historically accurate. Written in a fucked up language reminiscent of Riddley Walker, an overall excellent reading experience. And I'm not even Australian.
