I really do enjoy Nan Shepard. The way she writes makes me feel connected to the characters. It was a wonderful peek into the lives of those women in rural Scotland.

If I'd realised this was written in 1930 I don't think I'd have picked it up. I was quite invested in the story though despite often not understanding what was going on.

This was a struggle for me, I had to put it down a while and come back to it. I loved the story, but I had trouble following all the characters, of which there are many.

Lots of dialogue written in Scots dialect, which I love, but took me a while to get into the rhythm (there is a glossary at the back) Probably best read in one sitting to really get the most from it.

this is one big gossip session that is interspersed with the most gorgeous descriptions of the scottish country side i have ever seen (i love my country!) and i loved every bit of it

Such a shame, I loved the other Nan Shepherd book I’ve read, but I found this impossible to follow. It was not even the number of characters, although that didn’t help. I just couldn’t follow the plot at all.

This was one of those books where I enjoyed it while reading, but never felt compelled to pick up. I let it lie for long periods, and I'm not sure it suffered for it. But the prose was wonderful and I did really enjoy the characters, which helped when the plot wandered between arcs seemingly at random.

A bit dense in places and I found the Scottish dialect difficult in places, this book was received by the passages of good description.
