Exceedingly well done and taught me a lot about queer and Asian American history.

If there's anything I love more than a period piece, it's a lesbian period piece. That being said, this one was good not great. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't particularly invested either. It felt like the book was mainly centered around a series of lesbian coming-of-age clichés, and all the actually interesting stuff (which I wish the book spent more time focused on!) was the setting and the protagonist's Chinese-American identity.

I love a book that make me feels. This one wasn’t a huge pull at my heart strings but I could def relate to the struggles of coming out. As somebody who lives in SF and is familiar with the Chinatown area it was cool to be able to picture exactly where she was in the book.
I was nervous this would be one of those books where the main character throws her love interest under the bus and was so glad to see rlly how Lily stayed loyal to Kath and true to herself. especially at the end when she was being given so many outs by her mom to go back in the closet and be the “perfect chinese daughter.” I also loved all the historical aspects to the story and honestly felt we could’ve seen more povs from her parents like with her dads ptsd etc. i realize tht probably wouldn’t have fit into the story as much but whtevr. though i do feel like the red scare was under utilized and while im glad nothing came out of it i did think there was going to be a bigger deal with her father gotten his papers taken.
