When I was growing up, my parents would read this book to me nearly every night. I forced them to read from cover to cover and back again countless times. This book will always have a place on my shelf and it is a classic that, though it comes with marks of its time, will never fail to deliver the perfect read for a fireside in winter.
This book is a child level introduction to many darker themes and perpetuates a strong moral message to always be kind and compassionate. It, to many children, may also begin a critical relationship with the world, especially that which revolves around themes of money and the injustice of capitalism (though, to be fair, through the eyes of a little white girl).
There are so many magical, cozy moments in this book that I would imagine it may feel nostalgic even on the first read (though I can’t remember mine).

This is my favorite book.

How it is that animals understand things I do not know, but it is certain that they do understand. Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything in the world understands it. Perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul.

When I was little, this book, as well as Burnett’s other works, meant so much to me, and it’s a story I’ve always held close to my heart. Its innocent nature, charming characters, harsh themes (such as poverty, death, the abuse of children) and, of course, its sense of magic, have secured it as a much beloved classic, to readers old and new. There’s nothing unpleasant about A Little Princess...it isn’t overly sweet, nor is it unnecessarily bleak - it’s just utterly lovely and heartfelt. I read this book countless times growing up and I’m very happy that I was able to return to it as an adult with as much wonder and love as I had experienced on my first read many years ago.
