This is the first book in the Wallander series, which is part of the Masterpiece Mystery series starring Kenneth Branagh. I love that program and so far I really like this book and excitement for a great new mystery series.

Kurt Wallander, Martin Beck's bastard son? A bit moodier and it doesn't have the inside jokes, otherwise very much in the vein of S&W's classic series. Not as good, not yet anyway. It's all a bit much. Next to the case(s), Mankell has a lot to tell about his detective and the society he lives in, but at the end of it all the strongest subplot is the one about Rydberg, a colleague.

Faceless Killers is the first book in the Wallander series. I recently read An Event in Autumn and liked it, so I thought I’d give the series a try from the start. I’d give this book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

An elderly couple is found by their neighbors. The man is brutally murdered and the woman is near death with a noose around her neck (actually much worse than this). The neighbors could not imagine why this happened when questioned by the police. They thought they were the nicest people with no enemies. The police choose to start the investigation with possible robbery, even though the couple was so violently beaten up.

Police Inspector Wallander is quite the character… really a mess of a person. He’s overweight and not confident in himself, questioning everything he does (outside of work). He drinks too much which causes him to make many poor decisions. I lost track of how many times he hit his head and had blood running down his face. His wife wants a divorce, his father appears to have dementia and his daughter seems to not want a relationship with him. All that said, he’s an excellent police inspector who works much too hard.

Definitely a good, solid mystery. I’ll be reading the next book in the series soon.

There is xenophobia,, racism, and sexism from the main character that is never really addressed. He's self-aware enough to know it's not great, but not to do anything.

I’m 30 years late to the party but god damn what a book. Yeah, there are slow parts. But there are also slow parts in an investigation. I think the pacing made sense. I really enjoyed all of the characters, no matter how flawed. Idk, Overall, loved this.
