Welcome back, mr. McEwan. I have missed you, but I'm glad you can still churn out a most beautiful novel.

We follow Roland Baines through his life and a lot of historical events that happend (the war, the Berlin Wall, Cold War, Tsjernobyl, the rise of Johnson and Farage, Brexit...) from the age of eleven until he is in his seventies.

He is a vulnerable boy who becomes a restless man. He always meets strong women who shape the rest of his life. There is Miriam Cornell, his piano teacher, who seduces him, Alissa Eberhardt, his wife who leaves him and their son to pursue a career in writing and Daphne, the one who keeps him on track.

Baines looks back on his life and tries to see what he has learned. He reflects on whether it could have been different or not.

This book is exactly why I like McEwan so much. His portrayal of people and events is so good. Like when the piano teacher seduces the 11 and after that 14 yo old Roland, it feels like a normal thing, until your own morals kick in and you're like: what the hell are you doing woman.

Roland is a kind of anti-hero who is extremely likeable. He basically just moves on with whatever life throws in his way. He isn't obsessed with wrong choices. He just lives his life and deals with it.

Fine. 3.5. Very male pov, but it’s the full arc of a life and I rather like books like that.

Hänen vaimonsa Alissa on jättänyt miehensä kirjoittaakseen kirjoja.

"Lessons" may be the only strong modern novel that examines the protagonist's entire life, which occurs on the backdrop of some of the most important and controversial events of the last 70 years: Libya, WW2, East Germany, Brexit. The character is impacted by deeply irrational and selfish decisions of others and must make meaning amid their destructive actions. Deeply insightful and thought-provoking, the book joins "Atonement" and "Saturday" among McEwans's best works.

Will leave me with things to think about. As always with my favourite author, it’s beautifully written, at times thrillingly engaging and with such complex, real characters. Some very sad (and some more hopeful) insights about life. But! Lessons is not his best book. At times dull, and the overall messaging/narrative felt confusing, hard to follow, off?—just didn’t quite hit the note.
I suppose it might grow on me as it festers in my mind. But I was a bit disappointed.
