The innocent, wholesome boy, the cocky teenager, the lost young-adult, the still searching middle-aged man, and the old man, finally somewhat resigned and trying to make sense of it all.
This book drew me in more and more the longer I read. It confirmed what I like most about books: characters you get to know and love, who feel real and evolve over time. And a larger story or feeling told through these characters.

Mens rights activism but in a sort of fun way... Gorgeous writing... Like a semi lucid but also sharp... dense collection of memories

Spending so much time with a character always makes me feel like I know them in person. And seeing all of them grow older really was hard on me. Especially seeing Roland as an Opa at the end of the book when I got to know him as a child made me very sentimental about my own grandparents and their stories. I miss Roland as a character already.
While I enjoyed travelling through different time periods, generations and everyone's stories, the book was a bit lengthy. Still, it's hard saying goodbye to a family you were part of for several weeks.

Ik kwam er gewoon echt niet in. Al een aantal keer opnieuw begonnen omdat het niet beklijft en nu definitief gestopt op pagina 225. Ik stop niet snel met een boek en kan best een heavy boek aan qua verhaallijn, maar het pakt me gewoon totaal niet.
