This book is set in northern Minnesota and since I'm from the state it's easy for me to picture all of the settings in the book. The main character is Cork O'Connor who, despite his name, is a Native American detective. He bridges the worlds of the reservation and small-town Minnesota while investigating a plane crash. There are powerful government forces working against him making any progress in the case.
The book has a good set-up and likeable characters, but stalls out in the middle. It turns into the characters just driving around to check on each other to make sure that everyone is alright. The government forces working against Cork are cheesy too. So it's hard to feel much suspense or get caught up in the action.
One thing I liked about the novel was the incorporation of Native American spirituality. It's hard to say how much is authentic, though, since the author isn't Native American. I'm sure it's well-researched, it just seems like it's someone else's story to tell.
