I absolutely adore that this is a children's book, that the author took the method for surveying for moths and spun it around to be something fun with a different name that you could do at home.

This would make such a fun summer program for libraries to partner with local nature centers. Libraries could provide books about moths and insect field guides for identification. I'm making a note of this for the After Times when we can do programming again. In the meantime, this book is perfect for home schoolers or for families looking for educational summer activities. Less a book about moths (although it does provide some information about identifying moths and the moth life cycle), it gives ideas and instructions for families and groups to hold their own "moth balls" and study nighttime insect life.

I just loved this book and I don’t have a strong love for moths, let me just say. But I definitely have a new appreciation for those creepy little night-flyers.

This would be a fun activity to do in the summer or spring (before the time change)

This is an unusual how-to photo essay for kids. Great for bug lovers and other budding naturalists.

A photographic journal of a moth ball -- an event where a group sets up to see as many moths as possible, from making nectar to draw the hungry to setting up a sheet with lights to get the light lovers. We see photos of kids and moths during the set up and the moth-gawking. Burns also discusses the difference between moths and butterflies and how to identify different moths.
Back matter gives more tips on insect repellant, where to buy moth lamps, and where to find moth balls organized by zoos and science groups. There's a bibliography that is mostly moth identifiers, and discussion of the importance of mentors, and a talk about how the camera work went with the challenges of small moths and darkness.
