I enjoy the quiet dread and psychological pain of the safer of this book but the standard thriller aspect was not for me and a lot of the plot was glossed over. If you find the concept of a sicko messing with the victims partner compelling, "The Vanishing" is a lot more efficient.

I'm not sure what I expected with this one but it gave me a lot of nothing, honestly. The character motivations were absolutely beyond my comprehension. Laura's boyfriend, Bobby, gets into a car with a strange man one day and disappears and is never heard from again. Laura gets letters from the mysterious "X" who demands offerings such as her underwear and a tooth to give her coordinates to god knows what. I don't think it's actually clear what she finds at these coordinates all these years or why she keeps acquiescing to future requests if it's just coordinates with nothing there. The conclusion is deeply unsatisfying because there's literally nothing interesting going on here. The characters behaved in strange ways for adults and Bobby is literally dead and known to be so early on so I have no idea what it was all even for. I kept waiting for some interesting twist but none arrived. Sorry, this one's a big pass for me.

I'm a little conflicted about this one, if I had read the blurb before reading it I might have realized that I wasn't exactly the right audience but I saw a messed up tooth on the cover and yeah I can't resist that stuff.

The part where Laura was a teenager seemed a little messy and repetitive and I'm not sure if it was done intentionally to convey the immaturity of the character or if it needed another round of edits.

On the plus side it was a quick read.

Gripping. Read nearly all in one go, liked the mystery and
that in the end we only ever knew as much as Laura did about what happened to Bobby
