While I found this book a little slow to begin with, Esme’s adult life had me looking forward to running errands so I could listen to this audiobook. While the ending had me in tears, I especially appreciated the mentions of Adelaide and the Kaurna people and language, as I live here.

I realised that the words most often used to define us were words that described our function in relation to others. I loved this book, it took place of the protagonist’s entire life from the age of (from memory) 5. It really is about coming of age, being a woman (especially when that in itself was frowned upon) and a love of words.
