Other people have found this book disturbing, too raw, etc. My perspective: it's real. And amidst the darkness of the Depression and poverty of McCourt's family life, his humor and INCREDIBLE talent remain. In fact, what I appreciate most about the book - more than poignancy, humor, history, general Catholicness - is his literary skill; the narrative is a rapidly flowing river narrative that manages to meander and have purpose at the same time. I think this is a book I'll be coming back to, because the interesting storyline masks masterful skill.

Über den Inhalt möchte ich jetzt nichts verlieren, da er zu umfangreich ist.
Ich kann nur sagen, dass ich noch nie so eine berührende, herzzerreißende und trotzdem humorvolle Autobiographie gelesen habe. Auf einer Seite ist man den Tränen nahe und im nächsten Moment muss man schon wieder schmunzeln.
Frank McCourt war ein grandioser Schreiber und ein wunderbarer Mensch.
Ich hoffe, dass dieses Buch nicht in Vergessenheit gerät.

I loved this book the first time I read it but love it even more now having listening to the audio book read by Frank McCourt.
I was bracing myself for a super depressing book. Well, there are sad bits (death, poverty, etc.) but honestly I laughed more than I cried. Frank McCourt does an amazing job narrating the audiobook which may be why I found it so funny. Highly recommend those who read the physical book listen to the audiobook, you will probably have a different experience.
A compulsive read. Not extravagant or exciting, but, rather, a real-life reflection on growing up and the humour that it brings out in the telling.

E’ con queste premesse che Frank McCourt ci racconta la storia della sua infanzia e, contrariamente a ciò che si potrebbe pensare, lo fa senza cercare la compassione del lettore.
Attraverso una narrazione dalle immagini vivide, lo scrittore ci fa conoscere lo spaccato di un'Irlanda cruda e inospitale, resa tale dal passaggio della guerra, che solo lo sguardo dell’innocenza può addolcire.
Le ceneri di Angela è un libro che fa pensare senza sfociare nella morbosa pesantezza.
Nonostante il carico degli eventi a cui McCourt ci sottopone, il punto di forza del libro si trova nell’ironia che ne fa il giovane Francis. Ci viene così offerta una chiave di lettura diversa e forse più interessante.

I assigned this book for my honors students having not read it myself. Before assigning it I didn't know if it would be a successful experiment or not. But in the end, my honors class really seemed to enjoy it. It isn't a happy story and that was the biggest complaint from my kids. But the life of McCourt is interesting enough to capture the attention of 12 inner city fifteen year olds. I enjoyed it too.
